A successful few weeks have just got even better for Denmark’s Camilla Martin – she’s just been named as the “Eddy Choong Player of the Year” for 1999. This prestigious award, in its second year, is named after the Malaysian legend Eddy Choong, who put Malaysian badminton into the European limelight. He dominated the European circuit in the early 1950’s and was part of the 1955 Thomas Cup winning team for Malaysia. As the recipient of the 1999 award, Camilla Martin achieved outstanding results in her international badminton competitions, which culminated in her taking the World Championship title against all expectation last May in Copenhagen. Boyfriend Peter Gade was the first, and so far, only other recipient of this award. Martin was recently named by leading Danish newspaper, BT, as their Sportsperson of the Year, to add to her on-court success at the Copenhagen Masters just after Christmas. IBF sends its warmest congratulations to Camilla, who’s proved to be a superb ambassador for badminton, both on and off the court.
